A First-Timer’s Guide to Luxor: Temples, Tombs & Timeless Wonder

23 June 2026 1 min read

Luxor is often called the world’s greatest open-air museum, and with good reason. The city sits on the ruins of ancient Thebes, capital of Egypt during its most powerful era.

The East Bank is home to the temples of Karnak and Luxor — best visited at sunrise when the crowds are thin. The West Bank holds the Valley of the Kings, where 63 royal tombs have been discovered. The tomb of Tutankhamun is small but deeply moving. Arrive by sleeper train from Cairo for the most atmospheric experience.
