About Luxor

The world's greatest open-air museum — 30% of all ancient monuments on Earth stand in Luxor, on both banks of the Nile.

Ancient Thebes, capital of the New Kingdom pharaohs for over 500 years, is now the modern city of Luxor. No other place on Earth concentrates so many extraordinary ancient monuments in such a small area — archaeologists estimate that 30% of the world’s antiquities still lie here.

On the East Bank, Karnak Temple Complex is the largest religious building ever constructed — 1.5 km long, built by successive pharaohs over 2,000 years. A 3-km Avenue of Sphinxes once connected it to Luxor Temple, now dramatically lit and set in the heart of the modern city.

Cross the Nile to the West Bank and enter the realm of the dead. The Valley of the Kings holds 63 royal tombs including that of Tutankhamun, discovered intact by Howard Carter in 1922. Nearby, the Valley of the Queens, the Workers’ Village of Deir el-Medina, and the three monumental temples of Hatshepsut, Seti I, and Ramesses III complete what is, in effect, a pharaoh’s theme park of the highest possible quality.
